Welcome!
For new parents, we have tried to answer some questions to help make the swim team experience fun for you as well as your children.
Directions for away meets can be obtained from any Board member or coach. If your child needs a ride to an away meet, please ask around. Most people have space available.
All swimmers under 10 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. If you will not be at the meet to look after your swimmer, please make arrangements with one of the other parents. The coaches and Board members will be busy conducting the meet and are not able to watch all the children all the time.
One of the following pages is titled “Mountain Swim League Order of Events”. These are the order of the events at a meet, with the exception of the All-Star meet. Normally there are 80 events, and each event can have several heats. A few days before the meet, the coaches must submit which events each of the swimmers will swim. It is important that the coaches know well in advance who will and will not be at the meets. Generally, the coaches have a sign-up sheet for swimmers to indicate which events they would like to swim. However, the final decision is the discretion of the coaches. No shows are very disruptive, especially in the relay events and could possibly lose points for the team.
At the home meets, the events the swimmers are entered in will be posted on the bulletin board in the breezeway across from the pool office. The swimmers usually write their event numbers on the back of their hand with a pen, so they don’t forget.
Several minutes before each event, swimmers are assembled at the Clerk of Course. Sometimes it is a little difficult to keep track of which event is being called and which event is in the water. Please listen for the announcements. The swimmers are placed in numbered chairs and given a card indicating the event, heat number, and lane number. They are then directed to the starting blocks where they hand their card to the timer for his or her lane. After the event, the timer records the time on the card and hands it to the runner. The runner takes the cards to the scoring table. The runner also collects cards from the Place Judges and DQ (disqualifying cards) from the Stroke Judges. Timers are glad to tell the swimmers (who ask) their times at the end of the race.
At the scoring table, the results are tabulated and the score for the meet is calculated. These people are very busy. Please do not go to them with questions or to ask for your child’s times. The results will be posted as quickly as possible.
With 80 events, and sometimes several heats of each, it is very important to keep the meet running smoothly. Make sure your swimmer knows which events he/she is swimming. Locate the Clerk of Course and make sure your swimmer gets there on time. Please listen for event numbers and report immediately
RULES & GUIDELINES
SWIM PARENTS – WE NEED YOUR HELP – VOLUNTEER!
It takes upwards of 50 volunteers to operate a swim meet for these athletes. There are 5 home meets this season, including the conference meet, which will require about 300 total volunteers to run. You don’t have to volunteer at every meet, but we are counting on you to help out. The jobs are not hard, and we offer training at no cost to you!! A volunteer sign-up sheet will be available for each meet. See Janet or any of the FAST Board members so you will not be left out! The swim meets could not happen without our parents pitching in to help. Volunteering is the only way to keep our costs down and make it affordable for your child swim.
Thank you so much for your hard work and support!
SWIM SEASON SURVIVAL TIPS!!
Please acknowledge our sponsors and thank them for their continued support.
Any articles left on the pool deck will be collected and held in the lost and found. Ask a Board member if your child has lost an item. At the end of the season items not claimed will be disposed of or given away.
NO REFUNDS will be given after the second week of practice. If your child decides not to remain on the team before that date, you must contact a Board member to discuss a refund; telling the coaches does not count as notifying the Board.
If you have questions or concerns during practice or meets, please find a Board member to help you with your issues. The coaches have a large number of kids to supervise at practice and the meets are very busy times for them. Please respect that their attention is devoted to coaching your children. The Board is there to administer the team and make sure the meets run smoothly.
Thank you for your help in making this a wonderful experience for all our kids.
